On Tuesday, 13th May 2008, Renault inaugurated a gearbox plant located on the industrial site in Mioveni, with Romanian PM Calin Popescu – Tariceanu as guest of honour. The investment, expected to amount to a final 214 million Euros, reinforces Renault’s industrial presence in Romania.

Nine years after buying Dacia, Renault inaugurated a new major industrial investment in Romania. Renault Mecanique Roumanie is a gearbox plant designed to export its entire production to be shared by the Renault Nissan Alliance. The gear box will equip 1.8l and 2.0l petrol engines and 1.5l turbo compression diesel engines. Known as MT1/TL4, the 6-speed gearbox is modern and compact, designed to equip the Renault and Nissan vehicles.

Located in the Industrial Suppliers Area in Mioveni, the plant covers 29 000 mž. The new production capacity was designed and built according to the Renault standards, to the ISO 9001 quality management standards and to the ISO 14 001 environment protection standards. The working and safety conditions comply with Renault and world’s highest standards.

The production capacity of the plant is currently set at 5,000 gearboxes a week, allowing for 225,000 units to be delivered in 2009, with a further capacity development estimated by 2010. Some 342 people have been initially employed at the plant.

The employees now working for Renault Mecanique Roumanie will have followed a 96,000-hour training programme by the end of 2008, the equivalent of which totals 5 and a half weeks of training. The plant will count 660 people by the end of 2009, a hundred of which will be technicians and engineers.

The plant will first deliver gearboxes to the Renault Nissan Alliance plants, to the Douai and Maubeuge plants in France and the Nissan Sunderland plant in Great Britain.
