The breaking distance when using summer tires increases significantly on wet, snowy or icy surfaces.

For a tire to guarantee a perfect grip, the rubber needs to be flexible; the rubber used on summer tires will progressively lose their flexibility when temperatures fall below 7°C.  The rubber used on winter tire is more flexible, has better grip at low temeperatures and ensures good grip.

A winter tire has 10 times more treads than a summer tire.
